That virtue our time has lost I ask of He on high, to-
Day expect the grace to banish tears and despair defy, I
Shall not reject the Spirit’s treasures without a fight, so
Might He roll a star for me on rivets set by night, im-
Perfect I am confessed but holy man has holy arc, and
Holy holy holy call my Lord in the rain-cloud dark, I
Fear the far-light and not the haunts of shadows seen, but
Only that unseen gleam beyond my dim reckoning, by
Dream, by chance, by horrid longing I must elope, with
That virtue, that dreadful habit, that lingering thing called hope
