31 May The Heavy Joy of the Deaf Divine

O God, if prayer and joy shall silence find,
I know now what You refuse response for.
A proper hymn fades in a hushed mind,
Where absent sound, I echo no more —
Where reigns quiet, so dignity in kind.
My God, I know now what these silences are.
Hidden to chance where the sun’s halo lies,
Casting light but dimmed in face, o You star —
How clamorous our cries to our silent sky! But!
How silent Your smile upon this shadow far!
