[OCTOBER 4] The Invention of Work

Work is in fact a modern invention. Systematic wage-labor is not a timeless condition but a post-industrial novelty, and in the present day it is increasingly unavoidable and intolerable. This kind of work does not easily conform to the Benedictine slogan “pray and work.” It instead forces workers into becoming nothing but economic units like any other capital or technology, and inhibits the proper end of the human soul. We desperately need a proper philosophy of work capable of discerning the place of work in relation to economics, metaphysics, technology and living out the Gospel. The Invention of Work, with the opportunity presented by Pope Leo XIV, assesses the state of the question. I look to establish what would constitute a complete philosophy of work. I refuse easy answers and cultural platitudes to outline the critical dimensions that must guide a proper philosophy of work, one that is inclusive, coherent, Catholic and definitive.

My first book, The Invention of Work, has been released on Amazon KDP on October 4th. The book is short, only about 90 pages of content, with my intention to write a brief summary that can be quickly read and shared with others. I want to demonstrate that the current state of work is not sustainable nor is it copasetic with the Christian vision. I believe this should be an open door to real discussions about work from a realistic perspective and not contained by the thought-terminating cliches or platitudes which stifle political conversation.

A link to find the book (paperback at $5.49 and Kindle version at $2.99, which is as cheap as I can sell it) is posted below as of the release date. Thank you for your support and your attention, I hope to repay the favor with a substantive treatise on the idea of work.
