Love of Narcissus

Narcissus fell not in love with Echo reflecting his very voice,
So he must have seen something in the water-mirror that day
Other than himself to perish at its banks and melt to moist
Petals splashed of rivery ramble and tearless dew of morn.

I believe Narcissus spurned his lovers because as he silent lay
He remembered Orpheus who found a one he deigned his choice
And lost her underneath the world and still never forget the way
He saw her in his eyes and Narcissus watched his image torn,
Wishing to see in his eyes the one for whom he had been born.
