Capitulation

If I retired to bed today and had awoken tomorrow
A youth again with a whole life to do as I please
I would sin once more and sin worse than these
So I grow old glad but awake in haunted sorrow

Everything will be taken of us in days’ revolution
So I give it up while I can still become of merit
For I must give as inheritance all that I inherit
And resolve to resume the rest of my resolution

To surrender to a king before having retreated
I calculated and elected to offer my hand to fetter
For I found between two choices the one better
To disarm now by will than be forced when defeated
