Higher Things to Come (The Manifestation at Cana)

Believe belief, believes a man who sees
A wonder manifest as filigree
Of higher things to come as shown in these
First of signs at Cana in Galilee.

A heart of hardened hide has never bled

By blades of light, for light begins before
In eyes believing, needing not instead
To test the Lord in works to answer for –

The rivers ran with blood; Egypt beset

With signs themselves and none ever believed
Except believers, granted grace as debt:
A feast enjoyed, a nuptial bath received.

The vintage season wakes and comes to be;

The first sign at Cana in Galilee.
