The Delightful Summons

I contemplate the world before it passes away
Loving a sinner never made love to sin
If I died as I lived I’d live forever and one day
Not by what I’ve done for even evil gets the sun

But through the art of expectation I daily attend

Who summons rain from a pale-dry sky
And calls the night-time sun from hidden midden

The roads you walk will walk themselves over you
The mysteries of friends and cheer vexed better minds
If you learned to love the poor you could love yourself too
Loving the Lord has always been its own reward

And you learn nothing by a thing’s beginning or end
