Don’t trust what you can see, little friend
On ochre-bellied days to dissolve away
You might spin the twine when you fray
But nigh is twilight for prairie days
Don’t be afraid, little friend
Of the riptide drawing to the end
You can sink till you know how to swim
And heave with the warp and weft and whim
Without ever going back again
Don’t be afraid, little friend
Of careening valley roads ahead
You can fall till you know how to walk
And stammer till you know how to talk
Let your mouth move in flames and crawl
Don’t be afraid, little friend
Of the messengers God shall send
You can be loved till you know how to love
And ride haltered in its streams above
Giving you everything both hard and soft
