Jester’s Dream

Be faithful to your younger man, o mortal meager,
Recall your dreams if you can, clutch them eager,
And jokers make a pact (to be each other’s keeper),
Grace is a most fearful act, so I shift the meter:

The sullen bell shall start, the silver cord shall snap,
Genius is naïve at heart, it fears the thunderclap,
Every jester has a rule, a lamp for cheerless path:
The dire task of playing fool — is to never laugh . . .
