For Righteous Sake (The Baptism of Christ)

Light returns on the life of Jesus aged
Witnessed by John, last in the prophets’ wake,
Pouring waters spilled when the deluge raged
Upon repentant heads for righteous sake.

The Jordan splits and heaps its waters force
And Heaven, cloven open, yawed and seized;
Jesus saw the Spirit cascade in course,
To rest in proof of Him the Son had pleased.

Father begot the Son before all things,
Before the light was light and ever shined,
But now to suffer, greater glory brings
Righteousness cause, why good things were designed.

His first burial, first rising complete,
Jesus yields to the grim fate He would meet.
