Having lived is better than living still,
Love and having loved, the reverse is true;
O high palette sky, am I all I will,
Who spoke in truth, either Christ or Camus –
It plays with me, the truth, it batters me,
Life has defiant purpose, man is doomed —
Living has this sandy, gritty quality:
Hares in marigold prison, man entombed.
I live with life-fatigue the saints endured,
Ripped by the tide who drowned Stephen Dedalus:
A slave to beauty, nocked on silver cord,
Knowing life as my lover; love, her kiss.
Something yonder always pulls, I know its kiss,
It knows my life, I know it more than this.
