The boy grew up in Athens by the sea,
Was taken by pirates, sold for a fee,
Slaved in Syracuse for many a year
‘Till the day of his freedom drew near.
Eutyches waged until that day of
Manumission, and chose to stay
His lifelong in that port of Sicily
Watching ships go out to sea.
