Shadow Over Paran

The shadow of David looms over the land
In the desert the exodus had ceased in Paran
Where men are possessed and misunderstand
How the Lord chooses one over another man

And for the sake of them all
Said the wife of Nabal,
“I see a hungry specter
Over the Carmel sands
You prepare for slaughter
But no amount of water
Will wash blood from your hands.”

Ever since David took Goliath’s head
To the day he took up Goliath’s sword
He stained his soul with bloodshed
He was marked in the eyes of the Lord

Like Joab and Abishai
A darkness grew in each eye
Bearing witness to death every day
It grew harder for him to trust
In anything but blood-lust
He too felt himself slipping away

And it all took its toll
On the threads of his soul
No temple will be built
By a man of David’s guilt

But in a desert of the past
There was a woman at last
Who said to him a fantastic thing
God might make him a dynastic king
For He loves a ruler who loves to sing
Yet Abigail came not to offer praise
For his feeding of infinites graves

Like Cain and all his kin
A darkness was rooted within
The man who lived by his sword
And David cried out bitterly
For he felt his soul withering
And Abigail prayed to the Lord

That the shadow in David would be repaired
With linens of mercy that he had prepared
By the grace of the Lord an angel declared
In the same desert where Hagar was spared
