Folly at Meribah

When you told me all the things you thought you knew
No part of it was right from what I recall
Just because inheritance gives something to you
Does not mean you know the thing at all

When the priests killed each other on that solemn day of rest
From among them pushed an eagle-crowned man
He was a great general so he wasn’t impressed
By what he saw which he could not understand

When you did not tell me you could not ascertain
What I wrote, I felt so sorry for you
Just because there is something you cannot explain
Does not mean it is something you should eschew

When chanced to look down underneath my bare feet
There was holy geometry in sapphire arrays
Like a piece of the sky above the mercy seat
I have never forgot those most ancient of days
